About

Tropical Birding Tours was founded in 2001 by a small group of biologists who left academic careers to lead birding trips full-time, with early operations rooted in Ecuador and South Africa before the company grew to its current global footprint of 60-plus countries and 200-plus tours per year. Its guides are based across the Americas, the UK, Africa, Asia, and Australia, allowing it to run the same tour with a tour leader who actually lives in the region. In Costa Rica the company runs two flagship itineraries: the shorter Introtour built around lodge-based birding for newcomers to Neotropical families, and a 21-day Comprehensive tour that traverses every major biogeographic zone from the Caribbean lowlands through the Talamanca highlands to the Pacific slope. Target species include the Resplendent Quetzal in San Gerardo de Dota, plus regional specialties such as Wrenthrush, Snowcap, and Turquoise Cotinga. Tours include a Tropical Birding leader with scope and audio gear, lodging, meals, and ground transport.
