About
Oregon Pelagic Tours, founded in 2015, runs the state's main offshore seabirding programme out of Newport, Garibaldi and Ilwaco. Trips target Pacific specialties including Laysan and Black-footed Albatross, South Polar Skua, Long-tailed and Pomarine Jaegers, and Tufted Puffin, with marine mammals a frequent bonus.
The operation, organised by Tim Shelmerdine, also runs spring repositioning cruises on larger vessels (such as San Diego to Vancouver) and offers a notable All-Women Pelagic itinerary with an all-female crew and leader team. The company participates in seabird banding research and shares its sightings data with the wider Pacific seabird community.
