About
Lawson's started running dedicated birding safaris in 1990 and is widely credited with pioneering several of the now-classic South African birding routes around Mpumalanga, Wakkerstroom and the Lowveld. The family-owned company is based in Nelspruit (Mbombela), about an hour from Kruger National Park, and runs both small-group set-departure tours and fully customised private safaris.
Its core specialty is northeastern South Africa — particularly Kruger, the escarpment grasslands around Wakkerstroom (home to range-restricted larks like Rudd's and Botha's), and the subtropical forests of KwaZulu-Natal — but Lawson's also operates tours into Botswana, Namibia, and East Africa. The team is a BirdLife South Africa Recommended Tour Operator and emphasises a logistics-heavy, expert-guided model rather than high-volume group travel.
