Karana Bird Tours

Karana Bird Tours is a small Queensland-based birding outfit run by guide Detlef, who started leading trips in New Zealand in 2005 and rebranded the operation under the Karana name in April 2023 after relocating to Karana Downs, Australia. The focus is on small-group, often pioneering itineraries in birding-rich but logistically tricky regions. Current and upcoming programmes include Pacific Islands circuits (Niue, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu), Peru, Madagascar, Indonesia and a planned 2026 Sangha Lodge expedition in the Central African Republic targeting Grey-necked Picathartes and other Congo Basin specialities.
