About

Joseph "Joe" Aengwo is a Kenyan ornithologist and full-time naturalist guide who grew up on the shores of Lake Baringo, one of the country's signature Rift Valley birding destinations. He trained in tourism and wildlife management at Moi University and is a bronze-badge member of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association — Kenya's tiered guide certification system, where bronze is the entry-level professional rank with subsequent silver and gold grades. His work is concentrated in Kenya, with regular extensions into northern Tanzania and Uganda. He runs both small scheduled groups and tailor-made private itineraries, and is particularly well-regarded for his Rift Valley coverage and for owl identification — owls have been a personal interest since childhood, and he is a recurring guide for visitors specifically chasing nocturnal birds around Baringo and the Kerio Valley escarpment. Aengwo operates under the Kenya Birding banner. His base around Baringo gives him an edge for the local specialities — Hemprich's and Jackson's Hornbills, Northern Masked Weaver, Heuglin's Courser, the various nightjars and owls of the surrounding acacia woodland — that visitors on a fixed circuit often miss.
