About

Dorj Ganbold is a Mongolian ornithologist, wildlife artist and bird guide based in Ulaanbaatar. He grew up birdwatching in the Kherlen river valley of the Khentii mountains in eastern Mongolia, studied at the National University of Mongolia, and is the illustrator and co-author of A Field Guide to the Birds of Mongolia (John Beaufoy Publishing), the country's leading modern field guide with 154 colour plates covering around 520 species. He has guided birding and wildlife trips since 2013, leading visiting birders through Mongolia's signature habitats: the steppe and forest reserves around Ulaanbaatar (Hustai, Terelj), the Gobi (Yolyn Am, Boon Tsagaan Lake), the Khangai lakes (Ugii, Khukh) and the western Altai (Jargalant, Khovd). Specialty targets on his itineraries include Altai Snowcock, Black-billed Capercaillie, Hodgson's Bushchat, Reed Parrotbill, Relict Gull and Pallas's Fish-Eagle.
