About
David W. Shaw is a Fairbanks-based ornithologist and photographer who runs a small one-person operation offering single-day and multi-day private birding tours across interior and arctic Alaska. With a master's degree in ornithology and twenty years living in the state, he tailors each itinerary to the client, whether that means a relaxed boreal-forest morning or a hard chase for arctic specialties like Yellow-billed Loon, Spectacled Eider and the elusive Gray-headed Chickadee.
Half-day trips from Fairbanks visit nearby wetlands, lakes, boreal forest and sub-alpine country, departing around 5 a.m. to catch peak bird activity. Full-day itineraries push north to the White Mountains, while custom multi-day routes can encompass the Brooks Range and Arctic. Shaw also operates parallel photography workshops, so trips often suit birders interested in image-making alongside listing.
