About

Birdwatch in Alentejo is a Portuguese guiding outfit run by Bert Snijder, based near Santiago do Cacém around fifteen kilometres from the Atlantic in southern Portugal. The operation holds Licence No. 50/2014 in the Portuguese National Register of Tourist Entertainment Agents, giving access to protected areas across the region. The guiding circuit covers six distinct habitats within an hour of the base, including coastal cliffs, lagoons, an estuary, oak woodlands, lakes and the open steppe of the Alentejo. The Santo André Lagoon alone records over 300 species through the year, and weekly visitors typically log more than 100. The property doubles as accommodation, with on-site houses across a twenty-hectare site catering to individual birders, small groups and photographers using hides.
