About
Bird Uganda Safaris was established in 2001 by Herbert Byaruhanga, widely referred to in regional press as 'the Father of Birding in Uganda.' Byaruhanga is an Accredited Bird Guide Trainer endorsed by BirdLife International and is credited with training the majority of Uganda's working bird guides over the past two decades. He also founded the Uganda Safari Guides Association, the Uganda Bird Guides Club and served as President of the Confederation of Uganda Tourism Associations.
The company is based out of Entebbe and runs scheduled and tailor-made birding itineraries that target Uganda's headline species — Shoebill in Mabamba Swamp, Green-breasted Pitta in Kibale, and the full Albertine Rift endemic suite (African Green Broadbill, Rwenzori Turaco, Regal Sunbird, Handsome Francolin, Shelley's Crimsonwing) in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Multi-country East African circuits crossing into Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi are routine, and the company operates a sister Tanzania arm trading as Bird Tanzania Safaris.
Beyond commercial tours the company runs a long-standing women-in-birding programme and youth conservation engagement, which distinguishes it from the broader safari operator field in Uganda.
