About

Adventure In Hawaii is a Big Island-based adventure-tour operator that runs a specialised Hakalau Birdwatching Adventure into the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, a restricted-access reserve on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea that protects some of Hawaii's most endangered native forest birds. Their guided 4WD trip is led by an interpretive guide trained in tracking the refuge's endemics, with a full day in the field looking for honeycreepers and other native species alongside rare plants and invertebrates. The company is state-licensed (Hawaii activity desk #AD-852) and primarily sells volcano, helicopter, and snorkel tours, but the Hakalau outing is sold as a dedicated birding product with extremely limited Tuesday-only departures that routinely sell out weeks in advance. For visitors who want access to one of the only places left to reliably see endangered Hawaiian honeycreepers in the wild, it is one of the few legal options.
